WWE.com got the first facelift it’s had in years. Instead of the blocky flash-style, they’ve updated to a blocky wordpress-style, which is an improvement, sure, but considering the amount of content, money, resources, and talent involved, there’s absolutely no excuse for something that looks “typical.”
What I like:
- It loads much, much faster. There doesn’t appear to be flash anywhere (except the ads), which is likely where the boosts are coming from.
- The Blog format means you can now follow WWE.com chronologically instead of thinking “when did this go up?”
- The typography and headlines over the larger photo/headline areas are very nice.
- The superstars page appears the most improved overall.
- Superstars Quarterly is neat, but less than I thought it would be.
What still needs work:
- Photos aren’t actually any better. I don’t get it. WWE has a Youtube and Facebook page. Would it kill them to get a Flickr account?
- Video rights are still US-only, though commercials play anywhere. The “tiny” videos in the upper-right corner play with almost no wait.
- Still no RSS.
- The new look really does just look like a Wordpress blog with a fancy theme. When websites with a budget can look like this these days, this site looks pretty 2006.
